I want to know more about the tests and questionnaires

How do I prepare for a test or assessment?

The best advice for doing well in selection tests is:

  • Read all the instructions carefully
  • Check your answers to ability test questions before proceeding to the next page
  • Give answers that reflect the way that you see yourself in reality, not how you would like to be seen
  • Ensure you allow an adequate window to complete the assessments, so you’re not rushed in your responses.

You can find more advice about psychometrics here.

Is there anywhere I can complete some practice tests or questions beforehand?

If you are completing a test of verbal, abstract or mechanical reasoning, then you will find that you are presented with some practice questions before the real test begins. You can also visit our practice test pages.

How can I find out the time allowance for my assessment(s)?

Once you click the assessment link, you will be presented with an instruction page which will state clearly the time limit for the test and the total number of questions. From the instructions page, you can use the ‘Suspend’ function if you wish to complete the assessment at another time. It is only once you click the ‘Start test’ button that the test timer will begin.

Also note that personality questionnaires do not have a time limit. These can even be completed across multiple sittings. Though, we advise that you do not overthink your responses.

Can I use a calculator?

You are allowed to use a calculator to help with your working out for any numerical assessments, unless the assessment instructions state otherwise.

Can I review my answers during the test?

You are able to amend your answers whilst on the same page, but once you proceed you will be unable to go back to any previous pages within the assessment. Thus, the system requires that you complete all of the questions on the page before moving on.

I require adjustments to be made to my test.

Adjustments to the contrast settings can be made via the ‘Accessibility’ link in the bottom right hand corner of this page, with changes to text size and brightness available through your screen and browser settings themselves. You can also use the zoom button on your browser to increase the size of the information presented on the page. If you require any other adjustments, such as changes to the test timer, please refer to the separate instructions you will already have received from Royal Mail Group.

What if I lose my web connection?

Broadband connections tend to be very robust, but if you are using dial-up or mobile data there is a possibility that you might lose your connection when you are midway through an assessment.

If you leave midway through a timed assessment you can request for the test to be rest via the ‘Request a test reset’ link on your assessment page.

I have experienced a technical fault whilst completing one of my assessments.

If you have been timed out of an assessment due to a technical issue, you can use the ‘Request a test reset’ link on your assessments page.

Can I complete the tests on my mobile phone?

Yes, most of our assessments can be completed on mobiles, however in order to ensure you’re receiving an optimum experience we would suggest completing on a laptop, desktop or tablet machine, if possible. Whilst our personality questionnaires have been optimised for mobile, other tests, particularly those with a time limit, are better suited to larger screen devices. This is because our ability tests require you to refer to a reference material, and on small screens it can be difficult to see both the reference material and the questions at the same time.

What happens to my data?

Your data will be stored on the Psycruit system for 12 months as standard. If you are hired for a position and your prospective employer chooses to make use of an additional feature on the system then this will be extended to 24 months. After this period your data will be anonymised, in line with GDPR and the Data Protection Act . We keep this anonymised information for test development purposes.

For more information on how Royal Mail Group uses your data, please refer to the Royal Mail Group Privacy Statement on your Royal Mail Candidate Profile.

Can you delete my data?

If you would like your data removed please first get in contact [email protected], with the full details including your contact details, job reference no. and job title.

Have I completed the tests correctly?

On completion of all of the assessments, you will be taken through to two screens. The first asks you to confirm you are happy for Royal Mail Group to store your data. The second requires you to ‘send your results to Royal Mail’ by clicking the ‘Finish’ button. Once you have clicked the ‘Finish’ button, your assessment journey is complete. You will see a page that tells you that you are all done and have completed the online assessment – no further action is required.

If you are not sure if you have completed all of the assessments, simply follow the link in the email you received which directs you to the online assessments. If you still have assessments to complete, you will be taken to the assessments page and be able to resume these. If you have completed all of the assessments and no further action is required, you will see a message that says your assessments are complete and your account has been closed.

Is there a pass mark?

Unfortunately we can't give information about the way we score assessments. You can find more advice about psychometrics here.

Why should I take the test?

Completing psychometric assessments will give you a chance to shine as a candidate. They give you the opportunity to demonstrate your working style, and your aptitude at various tasks. They are a fair and objective way to narrow down the recruitment process, meaning that decisions won’t be made on arbitrary first impressions or unconscious biases. They also ensure that you are placed into a position that suits you, that you will enjoy and find most productive. Finally, you may also have the opportunity for some self-development, in the form of a feedback report or exploration discussion about your responses.

Can I cheat in the test(s)?

The short answer is no, we have checks in place to ensure that any attempted cheating won’t be effective.

The longer answer is that trying to cheat on our assessments wouldn’t benefit you anyway. Both ability tests and personality questionnaires are used to see the extent to which you would be a good fit for the position you are applying for. If you did manage to cheat the system, and get a job because of it, you may be placed into a role where you aren’t well suited and that isn’t the best environment for you to thrive.

Do I have to complete all my assessments in one sitting?

No, you can complete each individual assessment on separate occasions. However, while within a timed assessment you must complete it in one go and ensure that the assessment is shown as complete on your home page before logging out.

As personality questionnaires do not have a time limit, these can even be completed across multiple sittings. Though, we advise that you do not overthink your responses.

Is there a deadline?

Yes, there will be a deadline for the completion of the assessments, please refer to the email instructions from Royal Mail Group to understand more. Please note, if you do not complete the tests by the stated deadline, we will not be able to progress your application.

I am on the waiting list, do I have to complete the tests again?

As a waiting candidate, you do not need to complete the online tests, therefore, please ignore the automatic email asking you to complete the tests. If you are unsure as to whether this applies to you please contact [email protected], with the full details including your contact details, job reference no. and job title.

I would like to request feedback on my tests

Feedback is available to all candidates on request. If you would like to request this, please email [email protected], ensuring you provide the full details including your contact details, job reference no. and job title.

I have recently completed the tests, do I need to do them again?

Yes, if you’ve been invited to complete the tests, it has been identified that you need to re-sit the tests.
